Bert Smith Porsche Gets a Glimpse of the Porsche 918 Spyder

Cupertino-based Apple Inc. has experienced a couple of unplanned early product and feature releases thanks to citizen detectives keeping eyes on the patent office. Porsche has experienced a similar situation, with a potential new Porsche model, the 918 Spyder seeing premature daylight courtesy of a Chinese patent office.

It's the catch-22 of filing a patent: companies need to protect their inventions and innovations but releasing documents into the wild of the patent office can sometimes blow the cover off those same inventions' secrecy. Filing in China is particularly important, as the need to ward off copycats and knock-off imitations is vital in the world's most populated nation.

Well enough preaching about the risks of patent filings we're sure our Saint Petersburg and greater Tampa Porsche enthusiasts want to hear details of the impending model.

Indeed, the images gleaned from the patent office show a few interesting changes from the pre-production prototypes. Both the headlights and front fenders have been changed up from previous models, giving the Porsche 918 Spyder a polished look in front. Also, it appears that the door latches have been switched as well. They are now vertical instead of horizontal.

Though this is an official filing with the patent office, the current views of the Porsche 918 Spyder are by no means a final production blueprint for the luxury supercar. I looks like we'll have to remain patient and vigilant awaiting an official announcement from Porsche headquarters. Of course, its always fun to take a gander at the latest speculation.
